Diabetic Diet Guidelines

A healthy diet is the same for a diabetic as it is for anyone else. A healthy diet is low in fat with meals based on lean meats, whole grain foods, fruits and vegetables. Salt and sugar intake should be limited. Being smart about what you eat - as well as the portion size - is especially important.

Carbohydrates

The most controversial area in nutrition for diabetics is carbohydrates. Not all carbohydrates are alike in how they raise the blood glucose. Carbohydrates break down differently depending on the type of carbohydrate it is. For example, instead of white bread, eat whole grain bread. Instead of reaching for that processed breakfast cereal, choose unrefined cereals such as oatmeal. Switching some of the foods for healthier choices can be very beneficial for everyone, not just someone who has diabetes.

When someone experiences hypoglycemia, correcting the blood sugar immediately with fast acting carbohydrates is very important. Most people want to grab a candy bar or cookies to raise their sugar quickly. Splurging on this type of food is the worst thing to do because you will most likely eat too much of it while waiting for your blood sugar to rise. Choosing a candy bar may raise your blood sugar quickly but it can also cause it to drop suddenly. It is better to eat something like peanut butter crackers or talk to your doctor about getting some glucose tablets.

Fiber

Fiber is a substance in plants that cant be digested. It does not provide energy but if it dissolves in water and is absorbed (Soluble fiber) it can lower fat and blood glucose. If it does not dissolve in water (insoluble fiber) and remains in the intestine, it can help prevent constipation.

Fiber has no calories and is found in most fruits, vegetables and grains. Adding too much fiber can cause gas and diarrhea, so it is best to add fiber to your diet slowly. The recommended amount for daily fiber is 20 to 30 grams.

Fiber comes in two forms: Insoluble fiber and soluble fiber

Insoluble fiber cannot dissolve in water and remains in the intestine. It also helps prevent constipation. If someone mentions roughage or bulk when talking about fiber, they are talking about insoluble fiber.

Soluble fiber can dissolve in water and has a lower effect on blood glucose and fat levels, especially cholesterol.

Proteins and fat

Beef, chicken or turkey is most likely where you get most of your protein in your diet, unless you are a vegetarian. Your choice of protein is important because some is very high in fat. For example, a high fat meat (bacon, sausage, etc) and a very lean mean (skinless chicken or turkey, tuna in water) both contain 7 grams of protein. However, the high fat meat has 8 grams of fat per ounce and a very lean meat has only 1 gram of fat per ounce. Everyone should watch their fat intake but a person with type 2 diabetes has to be very aware of the fat in their diet.

A registered dietician can help you figure out a meal plan based on your lifestyle and weight goals. Nevertheless, if not managed, diabetes can cause irreversible damage to the body and may prove fatal.

Diabetic Diet: The Frequency And Size Is Important

Much has been said regarding what is advantageous for a diabetic diet program and what is not. At times how you eat can be as crucial as what you eat.

The perpetual battle for a diabetic is keeping the blood sugar level on an even trend. You need to steer clear of the hypoglycemic lows and the sugar spikes. It can be of great help if you eat smaller amounts more regularly. Your endocrine system does not have to try and go into over drive.

A diabetics endocrine system does not possess an overdrive any more. often it does not even have a high gear. You would like to keep the graph as even as possible. As few upsand downs as you can manage.

One of the things that can fuel an individuals impression of hunger is low blood glucose. This sensation increases over time. If you let it get to the point where you are feeling starved you can tend to over eat when you sit down to the table. The very best time to eat is earlier than you get hungry! That way you will not be motivated to eat too much because of the way your body feels.

It requires the digestive track time to execute its job. The food does not get processed into sugar immediately. The feelings of lack of food are still there long beyond the point you have eaten sufficient food to satisfy the bodys needs. If you are depending on that body sensation to let you realize when to finish eating, you can go right past the place that you should.

The cause is simple. You are able to eat food more rapidly than the body can digest food. Should you eat until you no longer sense an appetite you consistently will eat more than your body needs to maintain itself and get the blood glucose back up.

The rush rush culture we live in has a large deal to do with the upsurge in the number of obese folks within it. If you do not have time to have a meal slowly and let your blood sugar catch up, then it will become extra important to consume smaller amounts more often.

Some foods get digested faster than others. It can take in excess of an hour, based upon which foods you eat, to pick up the blood glucose into the range it needs to be in to have the feelings of appetite to ebb. Eating across food groups at each meal can lead to a lower average time for blood sugar to increase. When you are just eating one food that happens to call for a extended time to digest you will be inclined to overeat.

I do not know where the concept of three large meals a day came from. Probably from our agrarian past. It may well have been a long walk or horse ride back to the residence and agricultural can be tough physical exercise. A farmer without doubt calls for more food or energy than someone sitting in front of a computer all day.

Heavy meals can stress a feeble pancreas and lead to elevated blood sugar. Letting yourself get overly hungry can allow the blood glucose to take a dive. Moderation is the answer. Five or six meals per day are adequate. Portions that are no larger than your fist are the limit These two rules can make a world of difference.

Your blood sugar will hardly ever spike. Your bouts of hypoglycemia will happen less often. You do away with the highs and the lows. Your blood glucose level becomes more moderate.

There are even extremely successful diet plans centered on five or more smaller meals a day. These diet programs advise you the trick to losing weight is to never let yourself get hungry. It will also work for your diabetes. You may even find yourself losing a few pounds as an additional benefit.

Remember: 1. Eat five or six meals a day. 2. Limit your portions to the dimension of your fist or smaller.

Tips For A Diabetic Diet

Diabetic Diet And Losing Weight

When you go into your doctors office and you hear the words, Diabetic Diet you may tend to freak out, but you don't have to. There are no actual Diabetic Diets out there for you to take part in. However, a licensed nutritionist and your doctor can give you support and guidance in the right direction. This article will provide you with some tips and give you some ideas for to discuss with your doctor and the nutritionist.

After you have some time to adjust to the idea of having diabetes, call your doctor and get some information on how to eat properly to control your diabetes. Since there are no exact diets to use for diabetes you can create one that will specifically fit your needs. The first thing to take into consideration is that when you have diabetes you don't have to quit eating everything you normally eat you just need to eat them differently.A few things you can change in your eating habits are:

1. How much you eat

2. When you eat

3. How you prepare your food

4. Decrease sugar and sweets

5. Watch how and when you eat carbohydrates

6. Increase the following: Fruits Vegetables Whole wheat grains

7. Reduce fat intake

8. Moderation in alcohol

When you are trying to adjust to a Diabetic Diet Plan keep track of how much you normally eat at each meal and if you have snacks throughout the day. If you don't eat regular meals, then its important for you to create an eating schedule. You need to see to it that you are eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner along with small snacks in between meals. It is important to maintain at least a 1600 calorie diet on a daily basis.

If you are used to eating a large amount of food then you will need to cut back a little bit at each meal. Adding small snacks during the day will help fill the void in your stomach. This will do positive things for you. It will help keep your sugar level. Keep your appetite under control. And keep you from pigging out when you sit down to eat a regularly scheduled meal.

A really good positive thing about eating like this, along with exercise, it will help you to lose weight. Not only will it help in the short term, but once you get used to it, you will find you can keep the weight off. In addition you may well see an overall increase in your physical health.

Make sure you eat breakfast every morning and try to include some fruit. Fruit not only taste good, but it is good for giving you energy and it can be a great snack. Its also important that you eat lunch every day to help you maintain a steady amount of energy throughout your day no matter what you are doing. If you are a person that normally skips lunch try starting out by having some crackers or a salad for lunch so you will be eating something and it will be a light meal.

The next important meal you need to eat is dinner. When you eat dinner try to eat a well balanced meal so that your body won't feel over full or bulky. It is also important to eat at regular set times every day so that your body can adjust and process the food before you go to bed. Be careful not to eat too early. If you eat too early in the evening then you may become hungry again and want to eat before you go to bed.

There is one last tip to pass on about your diabetic meals. And this is how you prepare your meals. You should broil or bake your meats. In addition if you have to cook on the top of the stove use Virgin Olive Oil in lieu of butter and other Trans fat laden foods.

As you can see a diabetic diet is not the end of the world. If fact if it is followed, you will delay the worsening of your diabetes, lose weight and improve your health overall.

Guide to diabetic diet plans

Guide to diabetic diet plans

Mr Ghaz, January 4, 2009

Guide to diabetic diet plans

Most of people are looking for the best effective diet plans that can follow easily in their daily life. The most interesting part is that, nowadays you can get the best diet plans for enjoying your eating well without having to go for the diet. It wasn't too difficult to quit the diet plan or intensive exercise. But the best thing is that, we're still the same. Because of eating habits and our tastes have changed drastically, our bad habits on eating had time to turn themselves towards good habits of eating and stick around.

Eating well without diet

We will learn how to choose food that was healthier for us, and not food that would supposedly assist us to loss weight. During your cooking activities, move away from heavy.

It has been proven that the percentage of weight loss is 80% through an effective diet, and the exercise was only 20% from the weight loss program. For achieving the better healthy technique together with weight loss program planning, will give you in good results. Remember that, it is so regretful of losing all of the extra weight we have for a very short period of time only and put it all back as quickly as you got rid of it.

Eat for pleasure and good health, not for weight loss. Start the day with oats and you won't hungry for hours. Eat more fish, chicken, vegetables and salads, and less red meat, pasta, pastry and potatoes. Use a plastics squeeze bottle for olive oil and sauces, it helps you use less.

Use yoghurt instead of cream. Snack on fruit and nuts instead of chocolate and crisps. Steam instead of grill, grill instead of fry, and shallow fry instead of deep fry. Eat foods like pasta and potatoes for launch instead of in the evening. Drink better, drink less, and drink only the evening meal. If you really want something, enjoy it without guilt, and then lighten up the next day.

Our loved of food

What saved us was the very thing that made us overweight in the first place; our loved of food. We just turned it around so that we loved food that was good for us, not bad. As per information gathered from the food' s nutrition' s research, it is also proven that far from being restrictive, our new lifestyle forced us to be more creative and natural cook, finding ways of making the food without cream, and crunchy without deep fry.

How Safe is The Special K Diet Challenge

The facts about the Special K Diet Challenge?

Many people are familiar with the availability of and have take the Special K Challenge.

It would appear that there are an unending stream of diets which claim to be the ultimate solution in attaining weight loss. And although I am not identifying with any program on either a positive or negative basis, I would encourage you to select a sustainable healthy diet plan, because living in a state of obesity is hazardous to your health, and a better quality of life is available to those in better physical condition.

As human beings we are not designed to subsist off of one type of food or food group. You must attempt to keep a balanced diet, using proper portions of fats, carbohydrates and proteins, and fiber in addition, to help digestion.Calcium and magnesium, the most vital of the minerals group, are necessary components of your diet as well.

Some people find it surprising to hear that you need to consume some fat, this is not as much of a problem as some would have you think.Your body's collection of fat is not induced by the consumption of animal fat, it is induced by the ingestion of calories which are not then used by the body as energy. It is due to this fact that the habit of engaging in physical exercise has become so crucial. There is a measure of fat in healthy foods like bananas and nuts, however these fats are not detrimental to your health.Animal fat consumption may result in high cholesterol, while the fat in virgin olive oil does not, distinguishing between fat types is important.

No matter where you shop for groceries in America, or how you get your visual information , provided you can see your fingers in front of your face, you will be subjected to the promotional efforts of Kellogg, and the Special K Diet Challenge will be visible. The Special K diet Challenge is a based on Kellogg's effort to encourage the Obese in America to correct the situation by substituting one meal a day with a bowl of Special K cereal, or one of the products created therewith, i e Special K waffles, or Special K protein bars. There is nothing wrong with trying the Special K challenge, I would suggest however that you utilize the services of a licensed nutritionist to ensure you consume enough other foods to ensure a balanced nutritional diet.

Additionally, it is quite feasible that you will lose weight if you use the Special K Diet. You would be properly informed however that the reason you are losing weight is not due to some special substance in the cereal, but rather due to the fact that by eating the special k diet products that you will reduce the caloric basis of your diet.So if you decide to take the Special K Diet Challenge, make sure that you monitor your other food ingestion with precision.

The Special K Diet Challenge is published as a promotional program on the Kellogg Website.Modules for selecting a Special K Diet Challenge buddy, and for developing an electronic mentoring relationship with a diet coach are both available on the Kellogg website. The prognosis for success improves for most people when they are able to involve themselves with others who are in similar circumstance.and many can benefit from the optional on line coaching that is available through the site,in addition to the email and Facebook support programs that reside there as well. And while the plan is relatively easy for most to follow, and may be a time saver as well, because it saves you meal prep time for one meal a day, however the real lesson to be learned is that the reduction in calorie intake is a pragmatic approach to dieting, and control it by making a better meal plan.

I would like to mention, as in every entry, that the initiation of any diet, may result in exacerbating an already problematic set of eating habits, even resulting tn the opposite of the result you desired, Just because something gets promoted by a large corporation, or is published in a magazine, does not make it effective or healthy. If you don't exercise caution you may end up less healthy, so be sure to talk to your doctor and a nutritionist before you get into a diet. Remember, you can eat everything you already eat, you just need to cut that amount down to a reasonable caloric basis, and add exercise to your daily routine, if you take these steps your health will reflect it You can get additional information by visiting EliKen Health and Fitness.

Gluten Sensitivity, Is Your Food Making You Sick? by Jeffrey Dach MD

Migraines and Food Allergies

A connection between gluten sensitivity and psoriasis iswell known. (18-20) In addition, I mentioned to Jimthatfood allergies can cause migraines (7), andgluten sensitivity can causemigraine headaches(8,9). In fact, gluten sensitivity is associated with all sorts of neurological disorders: cerebellar ataxia, epilepsy, myoclonic ataxia, chronic neuropathies, and dementia, mainly in middle-aged adults.(10-13) I suggested to Jim it waslikely that a gluten free diet would be helpful in reducing his migraines.(8-9)

Gluten Testing with Entero-Labs

Jim's lifestyle made it difficult for him to go Gluten free, so I suggested he try the EnteroLabs gluten test. Sure enough, the test panel came back positive. Jim went on a gluten free diet, and 4 weeks later called me to report his migraines were much better. This article will discuss sensitivity to wheat gluten, a condition which is epidemic, yet mainly ignored or unknown by the medical system.(20)

What is wheat gluten sensitivity?

left image: Bread, courtesy of wikimedia commons

Gluten is a protein is wheat products, such as bread, pasta, wheat cereals etc. About 1% or more of the populationreacts to wheat gluten withan immune response andan inflammatory disorder of the small intestine which may cause malabsorption of key minerals, amino acids and vitamins. This has aninherited autoimmune componentandgenetic testingis available.(17) Other diagnostic testing involves looking for the antibodies called TTG (transglutaminase) instool or blood samples.

Immune Response In the Wall of the Small Bowel-Malabsorption

The immune response involves production of various antibodies and immune cells which damages thesmall intestine, reducing itsabsorptive ability. This iscalled malabsorption, andresults in the inability to absorb key vitamins and minerals such as Iron, Calcium, folate and B12.These abnormalities will show up on the blood count asiron deficiency anemia, and B12/folate deficiency anemia.(22) gluten sensitivity, celiac disease may cause malabsorption of calcium, and the DEXA bone density scan may showosteoporosis (21).

Any Organ Can Be Involved

The auto-immune response cancirculate freely through the body, crossreacting withother organ systems, unpredictably.

Immune Response in the Skinand Hair Follicles

Another common place for the immune response to attack is the skin, with a characteristicskin lesion called Dermatiformis Herpetiformis (it resembles Herpes)with intense burning, itching and blistering skin rash which is usually symmetrically distributedon the elbows, knees and the buttocks. The rash usually starts assmall blisters that errupt intosmall erosions. Dermatologists will make the diagnosis of gluten sensitivity by doing a skin biopsy showing characteristic findings.Immunofluorescence ofnormal skin next to the vesicle typically shows granular IgA deposits in the upper dermis. (27-29) If the scalp is involved, thisis called Alopecia Areata withpatchy hair loss caused by auto-antibodiesreacting with the hair follicles.(25-26)

Vascular System

If the immune response attacks the vascular system, there may be increased venous thrombo-embolism, stroke (2)(3), and coronary artery disease, etc. Thus, gluten sensitivity is one of the major causes of migraine headaches since it may cause inflammation ofcerebral arteries, or the brain itself. (9)

Neurological Problems

If the immune response attacks the brain or spinal cord, this may cause a neurological disorder (4, 10-16)such as ataxia (5), uncoordination, peripheral neuropathy (tingling with pins and needles)(6).

Going to theEndocrinologist

The patient with gluten sensitivity may end up at theendocrinologist's office with issues such as: Type 1 diabetes mellitus, autoimmune thyroid disease, Addison disease, osteomalacia, secondary hyperparathyroidism, vitamin D or iron deficiency, fertility problems, hypogonadism in men, and autoimmune hypopituitarism.(23) Autioimmune thyroid disease is especially common among people with gluten sensitivity, with elevated anti-thyroid antibodies (Hashimotos) which decrease after initiating a gluten free diet.(24) One can make a case for gluten sensitivity testing for all patients with autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimotos).

The Heart

The gluten sensistive patient may have heart involvement with cardiomyopathy, a serious and potentially lethal form of heart failure. In addition, the gluten sensitive individual mayhaveheart rhythm abnormaliies such as atrial fibrillation, reversible with a gluten free diet, if diagnosed early.Testing for gluten sensitivity should bedone for such patients.(30-31)

Sarcoidosis

A unusual lung disease of unknown etiology called Sarcoidosis is linked to gluten sensitivity. Sarcoidosis is thought to be an auto-immune disease because the treatment is immune suppression with prednisone. These patients may benefit from a gluten free diet.(34)

Addisons, Adrenal Failure

Complete failure of theadrenal glands to manufacturecortisol is called Addisons Disease and is associated with gluten sensitivity.(35) These patients may benefit from a gluten free diet.

Going on a Gluten Free Diet

Patients may go for decades with health problems, running through a succession of doctors, yet remain undiagnosed by the mainstream medical system. Treatment is usually curative with a Gluten Free Diet (GFD) which means avoiding all wheat products such as breads, pasta, wheat cereals, bakery goods etc.

Start a Winter Skin Care Regimen Now to Prevent Dry, Itchy Skin All Winter

Cold winter winds and hot, dry indoor heating can cause irritating dry skin for most people and aggravate eczema or psoriasis for those who already suffer from skin problems. But you can avoid the worst and have softer skin all winter long by starting a basic winter skin care routine now. Here are some proven tips that you can try for yourself :

1. Hydrate! It's easy to get dehydrated in the winter. Even just mild dehydration will drain your energy making the holidays that much harder. Great skin starts from the inside with plenty of good clean water (not sodas)! Water is not only good for the skin but also good for the body as water makes up about 60% of your body. An easy way to cut soda out of your diet is to replace it with natural herbal tea's it is recommended that you consume eight ounces of water each day.

2. Strengthen your skins natural defenses with a good quality shielding lotion. Look for one that is non-greasy and contains Aloe Vera and Chamomile -- natural ingredients that both soothe and soften skin. A shielding lotion will help your skin retain its natural oils and moisture. The best shielding lotion you can find is one that not only features natural ingredients but also is dermatologist recommended.

3. Use a sunscreen with at least an SPF of 15. Winter sun can be just as damaging as summer sun, especially when exposure is doubled by reflections from the snow. Good UV protection is vital to long-term skin health. Making sun protection a part of your daily skin care routine no matter what the season can help prevent premature aging and wrinkles.

4. Exfoliate to remove old skin. By exfoliating you can improve the quality and tone of your skin by removing the old skin cells. Superfoods Keep Skin Beautiful From The Inside Out

You are what you eat. The foods that we put into our body have the capability to enhance or diminish our beauty. Our body thrives on fresh foods that are not processed, pasteurized, or includes any additives. Naturally, organically grown foods are full of healthy ingredients that can remove the signs of aging, prevent diseases, reduce excess weight and keep you looking beautiful.

Women and men alike have been focused on restoring beauty from the outside of the body. Last year along the US along spent $2.5 billion on cosmetics and $10 billion on cosmetic procedures. The beauty industry has been selling cosmetics, makeup and anti aging treatments for hundreds of years because its easier to hide unattractive features and imperfections than it is to eliminate them with a healthy diet. Not to mention that over the past couple of decades our society has become so fast paced that fast food restaurants have taken the place of home made dinners. However, an unhealthy diet and the overuse of beauty products can leave your skin damaged, red, dry, rough, wrinkled and acne ridden.

Even though you can find your own natural beauty boosters right in your very own home. Your kitchen contains all the necessary foods that can enhance your beauty and make your skin healthier. Here is a list of foods to keep on hand and include in your daily diet to protect your skin from wrinkles, fine lines, age spots, sunburns, redness, inflammation, dryness, and acne.

During the summer most people head to the beach and forget their sunscreen. This leaves our skin exposed to the sun, which can cause UV damage and sunburn. To protect your skin naturally choose foods filled with lycopene and vitamin E. Lycopene and vitamin E are both antioxidants which protect cells from damaging free radicals. Additionally, lycopene shields the skin from sun damage, while vitamin E repairs and restores skin from sun damage. Foods rich in lycopene include pink grapefruit, tomatoes in all forms, and watermelon. Lycopene gives these foods their color. Vitamin E can be found in nuts such as walnuts, hazelnuts, and especially almonds, olives, spinach, and vegetable and plant oils.

Acne is a skin condition that affects thousands of people from young to old all over the world. This skin condition can be the beginning of self-consciousness for many young teenagers. Although the specific causes of acne are usually related to hormonal changes. Other aspects of our daily lives are factors that contribute to the intensity, severity, and duration of acne. Vitamin A is a natural skin exfoliant. It is the main ingredient in many of todays prescription topical acne creams. Vitamin A restores the skins soft, supple, radiant glow. Vitamin A can be found in collard greens, liver, eggs, carrots, peppers, kale, and spinach.

One side effect of the skin condition acne is redness and inflammation. When hair follicles become blocked the skin around the follicle becomes raised, reddened and tender. Not all types of acne cause these symptoms however they are very common. Although, redness and inflammation can be caused by other skin conditions as well such as psoriasis, and eczema. Additionally environmental factors and weather changes can cause these reactions on the skin. Quercetin is a naturally occurring flavanoid. Quercetin is an antihistamine and anti-inflammatory. As an antihistamine it depuffs inflamed skin and reduces swelling. As an anti-inflammatory it reduces redness. Foods rich in Quercetin include capers, black and green tea, apples, onions, red grapes, citrus fruits, tomatoes, broccoli, and leafy greens.

As we age the signs of aging slowly, but surely appear on our skin. Wrinkles, dry, sagging and drooping skin are all signs of decreased elastin and collagen in our skins muscle fibers. Botox is the growing beauty procedure to prevent wrinkles. However, vitamin C is a natural botox that builds and strengthens collagen fibers. Vitamin C can naturally keep your skin wrinkle free. Vitamin B also is important in rebuilding and repairing collagen and elastin fibers. Vitamin B is also important in maintaining metabolic reactions. Red peppers, citrus fruits, kiwi, cabbage, parsley, papaya, and cantaloupe all contain vitamin C. Good sources of vitamin B can be found in whole grain breads, pasta, and rice, wheat, meats, fish and eggs and brewers yeast.

Dry, rough skin is a sign of dehydration and water loss. It gets harder for our skin to retain water as we age. Omega 3 fatty acids keep the skin hydrated and prevent water loss in skin cells. Proper water intake keeps the skin hydrated and promotes waste filtration. Oils such as olive oil, walnut oil, Soya oil, rapeseed oil, and peanut oil, oily fish such as trout, tuna, anchovies, sardines, and herring and nuts such as almonds, and hazelnuts, and avocadoes and olives are all rich in omega 3 and 6 fatty acids.

Including these ingredients and foods in your diet and daily/weekly basis will enhance your skins natural beauty. Stop wasting money on cosmetics and makeup that hide your imperfections. Eat a balanced diet with plenty of water intake and reduce the signs of aging and keep your skin looking naturally young and beautiful.

Healing Properties of Castor Oil

Castor oil has been known to be good for the skin and hair. It has also been used as a purgative for ages. But theres more. This oil has healing properties that seem to be miraculous. The renowned psychic Edgar Cayce had carried out a number of experiments with castor oil and was surprised to see what this oil could do for the body, in both health as well as disease. He was no ordinary man and could tap into the universal consciousness, whenever he slept.

Gently massaging bearably hot castor oil in a rotary manner on the skin over an affected part or organ for nearly half an hour every day, continuously for a period of twenty days, was found to cure the malady naturally. Intestinal complaints, abscesses, gallstones, phlebitis, and even skin cancers have responded to this form of treatment. Although most doctors and members of the scientific community felt that this sort of therapeutic anointment was illogical and unscientific.

Edgar Cayce firmly believed that nothing happened by chance, including diseases. All that a person needed to do was to listen to his or her body, pick up the warning signals, and then try to do something about it. Chemically speaking, castor oil is a triglyceride. Ricinoleic acid accounts for almost 90% of its total fatty acid content. It also contains dihydroxystearic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid, linolenic acid, and eicosanoic acid.

Castor oil has a very high specific gravity and is extremely viscous. The ricinoleic and oleic acids present in it are microbicidal in nature and therefore inhibit the growth of germs like bacteria and fungi. Regular application of castor oil packs on the abdomen, especially over the region of the solar plexus, is said to increase the lymphocytic count and thereby improve the ability of the body to fight as well as ward off infections. Some of the other interesting uses of castor oil are in the treatment of warts, in the management of ulcers, and to increase the flow of milk in lactating women.

The use of castor oil in the management of skin diseases has always been known. Being very thick in consistency, it is valuable in the treatment of eczemas and psoriasis. Corns and callosities soften and gradually subside under the effect of this wonder oil. Some people also believe that castor oil has the ability to facilitate the expulsion of splinters that could have lodged into the skin. Pigmented moles, liver spots, and skin tags also respond well to regular application of castor oil.

Dandruff Can be as Stubborn as a Mule

Dandruff is a common condition faced by many people, especially in their early 20's. It is a disorder of the scalp in which flakes of skin appear. There are two types of dandruff. The first is basically a fungal infection is known as pityriasis capitis. In this condition, the skin of the scalp renews itself continuously.

The new cells formed in the lower layers of the skin gradually push to the surface as more new cells formed beneath them. As these cells reach the surface, they die and are continuously shed from the surface. Seborrhoeic dermatitis, the second type, occurs when the scalp is very oily, causing larger and greasier flakes.

Some of the symptoms of dandruff, besides flaking of the skin, are tingling and itching of the scalp accompanied sometimes by soreness, redness, and greasiness of the scalp. While the causes of dandruff are hitherto unknown, some of the factors that aggravate the formation are exposure to extreme temperatures; not combing enough to shed the skin; dryness of the scalp; infrequent shampooing; certain skin diseases like psoriasis, Parkinson's disease, and eczema capitis; adverse reactions to hair or skin care products; and diets which lack in nutrients like zinc, vitamin B, and fats.

Most people diagnose dandruff by themselves without the aid of a physician. The characteristic white flakes on your scalp are typical of this condition. However, conditions like psoriasis or eczema can give rise to symptoms that are very similar to those of dandruff. Hence, when in doubt, it is always better to consult a dermatologist to be on the safer side.

Dandruff is treated according to the duration and severity of the condition. Dandruff treatment involves the use of an anti-fungal or anti dandruff shampoo, which contains active ingredients like Zinc pyrithione, Selenium sulphide, Coal tar, Ketoconazole, Salicylic acids, Tea-tree oil, and Green Tea.

Here are some tips that can help you to get rid of dandruff. Mix two tablespoons of vinegar and six tablespoons of hot water. Dab with cotton into the scalp. Rinsing your hair using the juice of one lemon in a cup of hot water is extremely good for dandruff.

Give your hair a hot steam bath. Massage hot oil with a damp towel and leave it on the head like a turban so that the steam can fight dandruff. Add 1 teaspoon of camphor to half a cup of coconut or neem oil. Store it in glass container and massage this oil into the scalp before going to bed. Mix 1 teaspoon of castor, mustard and coconut oil each and massage into the scalp. Stroke your hair every night before sleeping as every hair root has a sebaceous gland that supplies oil to keep the hair soft and gleaming. Press the bristles of the brush against the scalp to exercise those glands. This will help reduce your dandruff naturally.

Dandruff can also be a major cause of hair fall. Therefore, it should not be taken very lightly. A dermatologist may use sophisticated equipment such as Wood's lamp, the trichoscan, or the video microscope to assess the condition of your scalp. So, getting diagnosed earlier can save you of a lot of trouble in the near future. After all, a stitch in time saves nine!

How to Prevent And Control Dandruff Problem Naturally

Dandruff problem can be a nightmare especially when we have to wear black or dark clothes. In severe cases of dandruff problem, the itching causes one to scratch the scalp which in turn leads to hair fall. However, this problem rarely leads to baldness. Dandruff is generally more of an aesthetic problem as opposed to a medical one. Contrary to popular myth, most dandruff problems are not contagious.

Most people deal with dandruff problem by using anti-dandruff medicated shampoo or over-the-counter ointments and lotions. However, they are sometimes not only ineffective but also exacerbate the problem due to the allergic reaction to the chemical ingredients in the products. In addition, some of these products are expensive because they require marketing and advertising cost to sell.

In this article, I am going to share some of the natural ways to prevent and control dandruff problem.

Before we go into the details on how to deal with dandruff problem let's examine some of the factors that lead to the problem itself. This information will help us determine the right approach to deal with the problem.

There are a number of different factors that cause dandruff problem. The production of skin oil, perspiration, dirty environment, excessive flaking of scalp, and hormonal changes are some of the most common ones. Dandruff is also possibly caused by other serious problems such as dermatitis, psoriasis, fungal or even head lice infection.

The natural methods of dandruff prevention and cure that I am going to share in this article are probably effective only for common dandruff problems. Chronic dandruff problems caused by fungal or lice infections and other diseases such as lice or psoriasis are probably best treated by doctors.

Prevention is better than cure. One of the best ways to deal with any problem is to prevent the problem from happening in the first place. This rule applies to dandruff problem too. Here are some natural ways to prevent dandruff problems. 1. Wash your hair frequently. Washing your hair frequently removes the flakes and also the oil on your hair and scalp. Use a regular inexpensive shampoo as opposed to the expensive medicated one. Contrary to popular belief, washing your hair frequently is not going to cause dryness in your scalp that causes dandruff. However, the frequency of washing needed to wash your hair varies from person to person. Some people only require weekly washing. Others with more oily skin probably need twice or three times a week. Some even require daily washing. 2. Brush your hair frequently. Brushing your hair also removes any debris from your hair which in turn reduces the dandruff problem. In addition, brushing also improves circulation. Brushing will expose more of your scalp to the air and sunlight which helps it 'breathe' so to speak. 3. Avoid or at least reduce the use of hair products such as styling oil, hair sprays, mousse, hair gel, etc. These products can cause the buildup of flakes on your scalp. 4. Massage your scalp while washing your hair. Massaging your scalp improves circulation. Many people don't realize that it is not only your hair that needs shampooing but your scalp too. 5. Eat a balanced diet that contains all the necessary nutrition that your body needs. Avoid junk food, cigarettes, alcohol, drugs and other etc. Reduce the consumption of meat products and eat more fresh vegetables and fruits. 6. Avoid stress. Stress can cause imbalances in hormonal system which can trigger dandruff problems. 7. Exercise regularly. Exercise can make you healthier. Choose outdoor types of exercise that can expose more of your scalp to sunlight and air.

Lastly, there are natural products that are known to be quite effective in treating dandruff problem. Here are two of them. 1. Tea tree oil. Use tea tree oil as a mixture in your shampoo. Add a few drops in your shampoo before washing your hair.. 2. Lime. Lime juice is also known to be able to control dandruff problem. It controls the oil buildup and gives a fresh sensation in your scalp as well. Apply some slices of lime or the juice of lime itself to your scalp especially in problem areas. Leave it for about 15 minutes and then rinse and wash your hair with shampoo as usual.

The Top 10 Natural Healing Plants

10. Common Dandelion

Taraxacum is a large genus of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae. They are native to Eurasia and North America, and two species, T. officinale and T. erythrospermum, are found as weeds worldwide. Both species are edible in their entirety. The common name dandelion (meaning lion's tooth) is given to members of the genus, and like other members of the Asteraceae family, they have very small flowers collected together into a composite flower head. Each single flower in a head is called a floret. Many Taraxacum species produce seeds asexually by apomixis, where the seeds are produced without pollination, resulting in offspring that are genetically identical to the parent plant.

Dandelions, flowers, roots and leaves, have been used for centuries in traditional medicine & medicinal teas, most notably for liver detoxification, as a natural diuretic and for inflammation reduction. Unlike other diuretics, dandelion leaves contain potassium, a mineral that is often lost during increased urination. There is also evidence that this property of dandelion leaves may normalize blood sugar. Dandelion leaves are believed to have a diuretic effect as they increase salt and water excretion from the kidneys. -Wikipedia.org

9. Garlic

Allium sativum, commonly known as garlic, is a species in the onion family Alliaceae. Its close relatives include the onion, shallot, leek, chive, and rakkyo. Garlic has been used throughout history for both culinary and medicinal purposes. The garlic plant's bulb is the most commonly used part of the plant. With the exception of the single clove types, the bulb is divided into numerous fleshy sections called cloves. The cloves are used for cloning, consumption (raw or cooked), or for medicinal purposes, and have a characteristic pungent, spicy flavor that mellows and sweetens considerably with cooking.

In test tube studies garlic has been found to have antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal activity. However, these actions are less clear in humans. Garlic is also claimed to help prevent heart disease (including atherosclerosis, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure) and cancer. Animal studies, and some early investigational studies in humans, have suggested possible cardiovascular benefits of garlic. A Czech study found that garlic supplementation reduced accumulation of cholesterol on the vascular walls of animals.

Another study had similar results, with garlic supplementation significantly reducing aortic plaque deposits of cholesterol-fed rabbits. Another study showed that supplementation with garlic extract inhibited vascular calcification in human patients with high blood cholesterol. The known vasodilative effect of garlic is possibly caused by catabolism of garlic-derived polysulfides to hydrogen sulfide in red blood cells, a reaction that is dependent on reduced thiols in or on the RBC membrane. Hydrogen sulfide is an endogenous cardioprotective vascular cell-signaling molecule. -Wikipedia.org

8. Ginger

Ginger is a tuber that is consumed whole as a delicacy, medicine, or herb. It is the rhizome of the plant Zingiber officinale. It lends its name to its genus and family (Zingiberaceae). Other notable members of this plant family are turmeric, cardamom, and galangal. The medical form of ginger historically was called Jamaica ginger; it was classified as a stimulant and carminative, and used frequently for dyspepsia, gastroparesis, slow motility symptoms, constipation, and colic. It was also frequently employed to disguise the taste of medicines.

Ginger is on the FDA's "generally recognized as safe" list, though it does interact with some medications, including warfarin. Ginger is contraindicated in people suffering from gallstones as it promotes the production of bile. Ginger may also decrease pain from arthritis, though studies have been inconsistent, and may have blood thinning and cholesterol lowering properties that may make it useful for treating heart disease. Diarrhea Ginger compounds are active against a form of diarrhea which is the leading cause of infant death in developing countries. Zingerone is likely to be the active constituent against enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli heat-labile enterotoxin-induced diarrhea. -Wikipedia.org

7. Lemon

The lemon is both a small evergreen tree (Citrus limon, often given as C. limon) native to Asia and the tree's oval yellow fruit. The fruit is used for culinary and nonculinary purposes throughout the world primarily for its juice, though the pulp and rind (zest) are also used, mainly in cooking and baking. Lemon juice is about 5% to 6% (approximately 0.3 Molar) citric acid, which gives lemons a sour taste, and a pH of 2 to 3. This makes lemon juice an inexpensive, readily available acid for use in educational science experiments. Many lemon-flavored drinks and candies are available, including lemonade and lemonheads. -Wikipedia.org

6. St John's Wort

St John's wort is the plant species Hypericum perforatum, also known as Tipton's Weed, Chase-devil, or Klamath weed, but, with qualifiers, is used to refer to any species of the genus Hypericum. Therefore, H. perforatum is sometimes called Common St John's wort to differentiate it. The species of Hypericum have been placed by some in the family Hypericaceae, but more recently have been included in the Clusiaceae.

An analysis of twenty-nine clinical trials with more than five thousand patients was conducted by Cochrane Collaboration. The review concluded that extracts of St. John's wort were superior to placebo in patients with major depression. St. John's wort had similar efficacy to standard antidepressants. The rate of side effects was twice lower than for newer SSRI antidepressants and five times lower than for older tricyclic antidepressants.

However, this review also noted that studies more favourably supporting the effects of St. John's wort as an antidepressant, were predominantly from German-speaking countries. The authors could not rule out the possibility that some smaller studies from those countries were flawed and reported overoptimistic results. -Wikipedia.org

5. Nettle

Nettle is the common name for between 30-45 species of flowering plants of the genus Urtica in the family Urticaceae, with a cosmopolitan though mainly temperate distribution. They are mostly herbaceous perennial plants, but some are annual and a few are shrubby. Nettle root extracts have been extensively studied in human clinical trials as a treatment for symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

These extracts have been shown to help relieve symptoms compared to placebo both by themselves and when combined with other herbal medicines. Because it contains 3,4-divanillyltetrahydrofuran, certain extracts of the nettle are used by bodybuilders in an effort to increase free testosterone by occupying sex-hormone binding globulin.

Fresh nettle is used in folk remedies to stop bleeding because of its high Vitamin K content. Meanwhile, in dry U. dioica, the Vitamin K is practically non-existent and so is used as a blood thinner. An extract from the nettle root (Urtica dioica) is used to alleviate symptoms of benign prostate enlargement. Nettle leaf extract, on the other hand, is what has been shown to reduce the pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF- and IL-B1. -Wikipedia.org

4. Orange

An orangespecifically, the sweet orangeis the citrus Citrus sinensis (syn. Citrus aurantium L. var. dulcis L., or Citrus aurantium Risso) and its fruit. The orange is a hybrid of ancient cultivated origin, possibly between pomelo (Citrus maxima) and mandarin (Citrus reticulata). It is a small flowering tree growing to about 10 m tall with evergreen leaves, which are arranged alternately, of ovate shape with crenulate margins and 410 cm long.

The orange fruit is a hesperidium, a type of berry. The extract of bitter orange (and bitter orange peel) has been used in dietary supplements as an aid to fat loss and as an appetite suppressant, although in traditional Chinese medicine it is always prescribed in concert with other support herbs, not in isolation. Bitter orange contains the amphetamine metabolites N-methyltyramine, octopamine and synephrine, substances similar to ephedrine, which acts on the 1 adrenergic receptor to constrict blood vessels and increase blood pressure and heart rate.

Following the presentation of a healthy young man with a myocardial infarction (heart attack), a case study and subsequent literature review found that the makers of "nutritional supplements" who replaced ephedrine with its analogs p-synephrine and/or p-octopamine from "bitter orange" had in effect simply found a loophole in the FDA's April 2004 regulation banning ephedra in those supplements by substituting a similar substance the regulation did not address, while permitting them to label the products as "ephedra-free". -Wikipedia.org

3. Celery

Apium graveolens is a plant species in the family Apiaceae commonly known as celery (var. dulce) or celeriac (var. rapaceum) depending on whether the petioles (stalks) or roots are eaten. The use of celery seed in pills for relieving pain was described by Aulus Cornelius Celsus ca. 30 AD. Celery seeds contain a compound called 3-N-butyl-phthalide that has been demonstrated to lower blood pressure in rats. Celery is thought to be an aphrodisiac by some people because it is thought to contain androsterone, a metabolic product of testosterone. However, it's just a misunderstanding of androstenone.

Bergapten in the seeds can increase photosensitivity, so the use of essential oil externally in bright sunshine should be avoided. However, this is a potentially useful action in psoriasis, with caution, and celery along with other umbellifers is one of the vegetables to be included in the diet as a source of psoralens for this purpose according to herbalists. It should also be noted that this may constitute a risk factor in skin cancer.

The oil and large doses of seeds should be avoided during pregnancy, as they can act as a uterine stimulant. Seeds intended for cultivation are not suitable for eating as they are often treated with fungicides. A common use for the seeds is as a "blood purifier" and it is sometimes taken for arthritis. -Wikipedia.org

2. Tea Tree

Chinese Camellia sinensis is the species of plant whose leaves and leaf buds are used to produce Chinese tea. It is of the genus Camellia, a genus of flowering plants in the family Theaceae. White tea, green tea, oolong, pu-erh tea and black tea are all harvested from this species, but are processed differently to attain different levels of oxidation. Kukicha (twig tea) is also harvested from Camellia sinensis, but uses twigs and stems rather than leaves.

Common names include tea plant, tea tree, and tea shrub. # The leaves have been used in traditional Chinese medicine and other medical systems to treat asthma (functioning as a bronchodilator), angina pectoris, peripheral vascular disease, and coronary artery disease. # Tea extracts have become field of interest, due to their notional antibacterial activity. Especially the preservation of processed organic food and the treatment of persistent bacterial infections are being investigated. # Green tea leaves and extracts have shown to be effective against bacteria responsible for bad breath. -Wikipedia.org

1. Common Hawthorn

Crataegus monogyna, known as Common Hawthorn, is a species of hawthorn native to Europe, northwest Africa and western Asia. Other common names include may, mayblossom, maythorn, quickthorn, whitethorn, motherdie, and haw. This species is one of several that have been referred to as Crataegus oxyacantha, a name that has been rejected by the botanical community as too ambiguous. n herbalism the active ingredients in flowers are: tannins, flavonoids, essential oil, triterpene-carbonic acids and purine derivatives. The fruits contain tannins, flavonoids, pigments and vitamins. An infusion of hawthorn is used to treat various heart and circulatory problems and to support digitalis therapy. The young leaves are good in salads. Various other uses are traditional in European herbalism. -Wikipedia.org

Boost Your Immunity with Zinc

Zinc plays a larger role in all of our lives than we may realize.

Several groups of people are at risk of developing dietary zinc deficiency. If you restrict your food to vegetables, and particularly wholegrain cereals, you could become deficient in zinc. Although zinc is present in these foods, it is not utilized by the body as efficiently as the zinc in other sources, such as meat, eggs and liver. Alcoholics also develop zinc deficiency, due to an inadequate diet and to large losses of zinc in their urine. Zinc deficiency also appears to be a problem in some disease states.

Inadequate zinc intake can result in retarded growth, delayed wound healing, loss of taste sensation, hair loss, skin problems, irregular periods, sleep disturbances, weakened immune system, fertility problems, allergies, night blindness, lack of smell and taste, and dermatitis. Other symptoms which may indicate a deficiency are depression, frequent colds and infections, growth failure in children, and loss of appetite according George Mateljan at the Worlds Healthiest Foods Organization He also advises that zinc is being lost due to food processing, stating that almost 75% of the original zinc is lost in our breads, cereals, baked goods and pastas. Because of this we need to have a well rounded diet finding our nutrition from varied sources. The amino acid cysteine helps to transport and store zinc in our bodies, so if there is a deficiency of this particular part of protein it can also result in a zinc deficiency.

A deficiency can be created not only from diet, but alcohol intake, protein deficiency, diarrhea, sweating, or an insufficient output by the pancreas. Certain medications can tamper with our body's absorption such as some antibiotics, oral contraceptives, stomach antacids, blood pressure medications or diuretics.

According to George Mateljan at the Worlds Healthiest Foods Organization Zinc may play a role in the prevention and/or treatment of the following health conditions:

The recommended daily dietary intake of zinc needs to come from different food sources, such as animal and plant. Our bodies need zinc for many different functions, which include protein and carbohydrate metabolism, wound healing, growth and vision.

Supplemental zinc, however, when in the wrong dosage can impair the bodies' supply of copper and calcium, but zinc aids and supports other nutrients and body functions. For example without zinc, vitamin A cannot be transported for use to other parts of the body or be used efficiently by the body.

Zinc is absorbed more easily in the body when linked to other supplements, which is why it is often referred to as "chelated" on the label, meaning connected with another molecule.

Good sources include sea vegetables, basil, thyme, spinach, pumpkin seeds, yeast, beef, calves liver, crimini mushrooms, lamb, summer squash, asparagus, venison, chard, spinach, collard greens, miso, shrimp, maple syrup, broccoli, peas, yogurt, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds and mustard greens. For more health properties of basil and thyme read "Spice Your Way to a Healthier Life."

Chart from Worlds Healthiest Foods

According to the mineral zinc is present in every part of the body; 60% found in muscles, 30% in bone and approximately 5% in our skin taking part in a wide array of functions from healing wounds to protecting the immune system.

Particularly high concentrations are found in the prostrate gland and semen. Because semen contains 100 times more zinc than a male's blood, the more sexually active a male is the more zinc he will require with an average male needing 1/3 more than the female.

The Pill Book Guide to Natural Medicines by Michael Murray, N.D. advises that not only is zinc found in virtually every cell of the body, but it is a component of over 200 enzymes. Enzymes are a necessary part of body functions and reactions. Zinc is also a necessary part of body hormones including insulin, growth, and sex.

Although severe deficiency is rare, there are many individuals with marginal deficiency particularly among the elderly. Dietary surveys have determined that our intake is from only 47 to 67% of what our bodies require.

When taking zinc supplements or foods with zinc only about 20% is actually absorbed by the body. The absorption of zinc is inhibited by dietary fiber and phytic acide which is found in bran, wholegrain cereals and nuts.

One of the first things one does when they get a cold is load up on juices. While juices are a great tool at fighting off colds, we need to learn to arm ourselves with zinc and citrus within a different time frame.

In studies conducted on the common cold it was found that zinc lozenges aided in reducing cold symptoms significantly, however the research also indicated that in order for the zinc to be effective it must be free of sorbitol, mannitol and citric acid. When the Cold-Eeze lozenges were used and participants dissolved one every two hours in their mouths, 86 % of those studies found symptoms greatly reduced. If using a zinc lozenge do not eat or drink citrus hour before or after as the citrus negates the benefits of the zinc.

One of the most common deficiencies for patients with Alzheimer's has been found to be zinc. Of ten patients studied, eight improved after given 27 mg. of zinc aspirate. There was a marked improvement in memory, understanding, social contact and communication.

Zinc deficiency has been linked to premature births, low birth weights, growth retardation, and preeclampsia.

For general health support and during pregnancy or lactation the recommended daily dose is 15 - 20 mg. for women, however for a specific health issue the dosage may range from 30 to 45 mg. for men and 20 to 30 mg. for men. For a cold the lozenges should be doubled with the first dose, and then one lozenge of 15 - 25 mg. of elemental zinc dissolved in the mouth every two hours of being awake. One should not exceed one week of this high dosage.

As always, it is important to consult with your physician any time you have symptoms you are unfamiliar or concerned with and to advise your doctor of any supplements you may be taking. Any information supplied in this article is not meant to substitute for the medical advice of your family practitioner.

So if that hasn't grabbed your attention, read on to find out how you can benefit your mind, body and spirit while losing weight and feel great again.

Things You'll Need:

TAKE STOCK OF YOUR HEALTHIf you are just starting a walking regimen it's always wise to check with your doctor first to make sure you are physically able to accomplish your mission. Most times and most people are able to start a walking regimen with no problems, but if there is any doubt; check with a physician.

START BY STRETCHING AND BREATHINGAlways begin any routine with some kind of deep breathing and stretching, don't laugh about the breathing. Breathing is a very important part in helping to get the body ready for anything. Not only will this benefit muscles and surrounding tissue, but will get your heart going and primed for action. Make sure to take at least three deep breaths (in through the nose, out through the mouth, counting to five on the in and out). Then stretch out every muscle from top to bottom, breathing with each repetition.

START WALKINGNot only is walking fantastic for your heart (it cuts your risk of heart disease) it's great for lessening your chances of cancer (all types), even diabetes and strokes. All that by just walking! Walking at a moderate pace for 30-60 minutes is great. But if you're just starting, even slow walking will burn approximately 100 calories per mile for a 180 pound person. Once you get a routine going you'll notice that your weight will plateau and after a time the body has adjusted to that movement; it's because you can only get so far with your weight loss by walking. Increase your walking time and distance as time progresses as walking is a perfect starting place, but once your body has become accustomed to the activity, it will adapt and to lose anymore weight you'll have to kick it up a notch. But by this time your body will be craving more than just walking and you'll be loving how your new body feels and how you feel because of it.

ADD RESISTANCE TRAININGNIA (Neuromuscular Integrative Action) , Yoga and Pilates are perfect candidates for this when you don't want to have the highly muscled body of a weightlifter or Miss Universe. Resistance training doesn't have to include dumbells and weight lifting machines. Both Pilates and Yoga offer "core strengthening" by using your own body weight as resistance, and NIA offers fun, dancing and aerobic activity to the meditational workouts. There are so many added benefits of resistance training like; better posture, mood, increased metabolic rate, bone density all while toning and defining the muscles. Yoga, Pilates and NIA also offer wonderful side effects of mental, emotional and spiritual connections to your inner self adding personal growth to the long list of benefits. If you are just not into NIA, Yoga or Pilates, you can always try other types of exercise that will use a lot of oxygen (which burns fat) like swimming, rowing, running, biking, cross-countr y skiing, tennis, or whatever you enjoy that keeps you moving. Check Resources at the bottom of this article for more information.

TREAT YOUR BODY AS A TEMPLE Your body is the temple for your soul. It is beautiful with all of it's imperfections and perfections alike. Make sure to treat yourself in a loving way. Eat beautiful, healthy foods and give yourself time everyday to appreciate the wonders of your human body, mind and spirit. Thank your body for all the wonderful things it does for you. Treat it with respect and compassion.

HAVE FUN!Don't forget to HAVE FUN! If you get in a rut or start losing interest in a certain exercise or routine, change it up! Try dancing while making dinner, that will heat things up! The ingredients you need to make a meal are located all over your kitchen, so why not boogie over to the pantry and do a shimmy-shake with your rice, then try some squats to retrieve your pots and pans. Or how about a slide on over to the fridge to grab your gallon of water and lift it above your head and whoo hoo, switch hands! Now you're getting into it! Or instead of boring same-old, same-old cleaning your house, try lunges and dancing through housework. (I love waltzing, and dancing to classical music when vacuuming, and sometimes I'll put on a funky groove, or whatever I'm in the mood for to get moving while doing chores). Get creative and have a ball and get your kids, friends and family involved, they'll love it. Or if your girlfriend calls, instead of standing or sitting there gabb ing, walk around while chatting. Get in some steps while talking and you'll be surprised at how much movement you can get into a regular conversation. Just try making it fun for yourself and enjoy moving every chance you get.

HEALTHY CHOICESTry drinking a cup of green tea everyday while practicing positive affirmations. Green Tea has been studied for it's weight loss and fat burning benefits and even raising metabolism naturally along with many other pluses. Choose colorful foods and healthy snacks to get you through your day. And make sure to get plenty of sleep. Proper rest can help with stress, weight loss and overall well being. You're on your way to a better, happier you, and it will show.

Psoriasis And Eczema Successfully Treated With Chinese Medicine

Psoriasis is a common disorder affecting as many as one person in 50. Uncommon before the age of 10, it often erupts between the ages of 15 and 50. Whilst the cause is unknown, it can sometimes runs in families.

Together with eczema, these two often unsightly and debilitating dermatological conditions are increasingly being successfully treated with Traditional Chinese Medicine. Incorporating the use of acupuncture and, in particular, herbs, TCM offers a positive alternative to more orthodox methods. Also, the latter is not always effective and can cause unpleasant side effects.

Eczema

The two most common forms are contact eczema, which develops within minutes and is caused by reaction to anything from rubber shoes to metal watch straps, and atopic eczema, which usually affects people with a family history of asthma or hay fever, and can take months, or even years to develop, appearing at any time.

The skin becomes inflamed and usually develops a persistent itchiness, often with blisters that weep and then form scabs and crusts. Mostly it strikes during childhood and then clears up after puberty and adolescence. However, many people are affected in later life, especially those coming into regular contact with bleaches, detergents, wax polishes and so on, who can get eczema on their hands.

Psoriasis

The raised, red, scaly patches caused by psoriasis can appear anywhere on the skin, but most often affect the knees or elbows. Small red spots may eventually merge to form circular or oval patches 5 to 7.5 cm across. It often affects both sides of the body symmetrically, with fingernails and toenails frequently becoming involved. About one in 20 psoriasis sufferers develop a mild form of rheumatoid arthritis, often in the fingers, ankles and knees.

The complaint sometimes follows two or three weeks after a throat infection and can also be triggered by some orthodox medical drugs. Although it is not caused by stress, worry and anxiety may aggravate an attack.

Treatment with TCM

Medicinal plants from China have in recent years gained a reputation for successfully treating both psoriasis and atopic eczema.. People with severe, widespread, eczema - both wet and dry - often find Chinese herbs succeed where orthodox medicine has failed.

Treatment with a decoction of herbs is taken at regular intervals, sometimes for several months. During this time the practitioner may make necessary alterations to the prescription, depending on the patients progress.

Traditionally, acupuncturists believe that eczema and psoriasis are both associated with exposure to heat, damp and wind. Treatment is based on counteracting the effect of the elements, and by trying to correct any blood and energy deficiencies that may result.

Meridians treated would be those corresponding to the large intestine, lungs, spleen and stomach, as well as the liver which may also need a boost to help expel the eczema. A special diet may also be advised. This involves avoiding spicy foods, dairy products, citrus fruits, alcoholic drinks, coffee, and fry-ups.

Overall, the prognosis for sufferers of either eczema or psoriasis is becoming increasingly more positive. Traditional Chinese Medicine has gathered numerous supporters amongst the orthodox medical profession and patients alike.

If you would like any advice on dermatological, or any other health issues, before deciding to come for treatment, please call me. Im at 103-105 Harley Street on 0207 487 4568

Baking Soda ? A Medical Treatment?

Baking Soda A Medical Treatment?

The uses for baking soda are well documented, however, they are not well known. Many of the following uses have been proven on myself or those close to me. They are not old wives tales or myths in any sense of the word. I will provide hyperlinks for your additional insight.

It is important to understand why something works, so that other uses can be found for the substance as well. Your talents of discovery are being challenged by this understanding.

Premise: Allsickness takes root in an acidic environment

When our body becomes acidic, usually because of our diet, our immune system is challenged and heavily loaded. It does not take much more to push us over the edge for any kind of illness. However, if we maintain a neutral pH or alkaline condition, we do not get sick.

Fact: When applying baking soda directly to our body, no matter where the condition is found, we radically and immediately change the pH balance to become alkaline in that location. Therefore, the condition dies and goes away.

Dandruff

Wash your hair normally using you favorite shampoo and conditioner. Then take about a tablespoon of baking soda and apply it to your head, rubbing it in until it reaches your scalp. Assuming you have washed your hair first when showering, leave it in your hair until you are through washing your body, then rinse your hair, thoroughly removing the baking soda. Do this daily. Within a week or so you will notice a drastic change in the amount of dandruff you have and soon your dandruff will be completely gone. This also works for conditions like Psoriasis and Rosacea, however, you might want to treat the condition like a mole or wart as described below.

Wart or Mole Removal

Use a pin to carefully scratch the surface of either condition in order to upset the cellular structure on the surface. DO NOT make it bleed. Mix enough baking soda with Castor Oil to make a poultice that will stay under a band aide that is large enough to cover the condition. Apply the poultice and then change it daily for up to about three weeks. Usually the condition falls off in this amount of time. If not, continue. Once the condition is gone, notice no scar! NOTE: Sensitive skin areas may require ONLY Castor Oil. However, usually you can apply both condiments for a shorter time daily and leave only Castor Oil for the longer period, changing daily.

Thick and/or Misshapen Toenails

These conditions are normally caused by mold. Mold is revealing itself in the form of these conditions. Again, to kill the mold, simply change its living condition to alkaline. Heres how:

Pour a warm foot bath and use a minimum of four tablespoons of baking soda in the water. Mix the baking soda well so that only a minimum is found on the bottom of the foot bath. Mix again periodically through the bath or as you change water. Place both feet in the water and enjoy the soothing effects for about an hour each treatment. Perform this routine a minimum of three to four times per week and continue until you notice your toenails changing back to their regular shape and texture. It takes months to grow new toenails, so do not be discouraged if you do not see progress within the first week. I have used this technique to change from black rough nails, so smooth pink nails in less than 6 months.

Cancer a Fungal Infection

What? Cancer can be CURED using Baking Soda? YES! Cancer is a Fungus, Mold! I am only the messenger, but what your doctor may not know, or be able to tell you, is that Cancer IS treatable in most any form, most anywhere in the body, a nearly 100% CURE rate, in as little as 6 days, with NO Side-Effects and it leaves YOU problem Free to live the rest of your natural years WITHOUT Cancer. The BEST the medical community can claim is 18% cure rate, and many side effects. Their cure is defined by living 5 years and one day beyond treatment. We all know a cure is living problem free for the rest of your natural life.

This was discovered in the 1980s by Doctor Tullio Simoncini of Rome, Italy. He was devastated at the destruction Cancer was doing to his patients. He was equally distraught by the standard for treatment of Cancer as dictated through the World Health Organization. Until his discovery, and even now, only three methods of treatment are recognized by the Organization or the rest of the medical community in the world; Surgery, Radiation and Chemo-therapy. Two of these are known to CAUSE Cancer! Dr. Simoncini consulted Dr. God, who led him to discover that a simple solution of Baking Soda and Saline solution will kill Cancer, leaving surrounding tissue unharmed and the patient brought back to their pre-Cancer condition. Although this discovery has not been advertised well, most likely due to the influence of the Pharma industry, it is TRUE. Many doctors have been trained around the world to treat Cancer with the Therapy. Unfortunately, insurances do not cover this treatment. But, what is YOUR life worth? Thank God it only takes approximately $0.12 of Baking Soda to cure a patient. See /watch?v=nn_nMVShU3UPart 1 of 3. Please listen to all parts. Understand that the real enemy of health is our medical system, that continues to shake their fist in the face of God. It is a shame such smart people will go to the extremes they have and ignore such simple solutions. Listen carefully to each of the three parts! You be the judge. Itchy Scalp Treatment

If you suffer from itchy scalp, you know it can be painful and embarrassing. Just remember you are not alone thousands of people have itchy scalp. There are hundreds of reason why your scalp can itchy here are the top few. Most of these are easy to rule out but sometimes your problem can be more complex than others.

Dirty Scalp

If you suffer from oily hair than sebum builds up on your scalp very quickly. This over production of oils builds up on your scalp causing it to itch. It itches because dead skin and the oils on your scalp mix together and harden. Many people mistake dirty scalp for dandruff but it is not. The best thing you can do it prevent this is washing your hair at least every other day. This will prevent the build up of oils, dirt and gunk. If you have really oily hair look for a shampoo with Zinc PCA in it. This will help regulate the oil glands in your scalp and help reduce the amount of sebum produced.

Dry Scalp

If your scalp does not produce enough oils it will tend to by dry. You can tell if you have dry scalp because the flake will be very tiny and thin. Once your scalp get to dry it will itch terribly and tend to be irritable like a minor sunburn. The most common causes of dry scalp are due to washing the hair to much. If you have naturally dry hair and wash your hair daily it will tend to make it dryer. Scalp damage due to heat. Using heating tools in excess will dry your scalp out. And very ridged weather with high wind will suck all of the moisture out of your hair. Look for hydrating shampoos that contain emu oil to help fix dry scalp.

Stress

Extreme stress can change the hormone levels in your body causing the skin and scalp to become dry. This can be last for days or even months at a time. The best way of dealing with it is by using a moisturizing shampoo or just be relaxing.

Neurogenic Excoriation

This is extreme scratching, it can physically damage the scalp and cause thinning hair and scalp infection.

Scalp Fungus

When you have a fungal colony develop on your scalp it will start with itchy irritated skin that starts to flake in areas. The flakes will appear yellowish in color and sometime thick. Your scalp will become inflamed in areas and extra oily which is good for the fungus because that is what it is feeding on.

Scalp Dander

Dandruff is also caused by oily scalp. It is were your scalp becomes irritated and sheds the top layer of dead skin. It also can happen on your eye brows as well. Hormones play a huge role in dandruff that is why it is most common in teenage males. Bad eating habits can also affect it as well. Again weather can play a big role with flake production so try to stay out of extreme heat or cold. Washing your hair with a sulfate free shampoo will help moisturize your scalp and ease the irritation so will an emu oil based shampoo. Wash your hair in semi warm water to prevent further irritation. Stay away from harsh chemical shampoos like coal tar. Look for shampoos that contain Zinc PCA, Emu Oil and Shea Butter. Also try to avoid hair products that are alcohol based or contain mineral oils. These products cause tiny chemical reactions on your scalp that can irritate it worse. As we stated earlier diet a has a lot to do with your scalp healthy, always remember you are what you eat. So stay away from any kind of sugars and fried foods. And try to eat as much vegetables, lean meats and whole grains as possible. UV Exposure

Having a sunburn on your scalp can cause it to itch as well. Even if you have a thick head of hair your scalp can get burnt so if you are going to be out side for long periods of time cover up your melon.

Scalp Acne

This one is pretty apparent it shows up as tiny red bumps on your scalp and are cause by clogged follicles so find a good cleansing shampoo to help get rid of them.

Staphylococcus Aureus

Also know as follicutlis, it is cause by a bacterial infection on your scalp. It can be spread easily but is also easily treated by an anti microbial shampoo.

Herpes Tonsurans

Can also be called ringworm of the scalp is a fungal infection that can eventually lead to hair loss of not treated. It appears a dark speck on the scalp. Often leads to thick yellow flakes and very sensitive and inflamed skin. It spreads very easily but is also easily treated.

Pityriasis Amiantacea

Is a scaly disorder where large gray scales develop on the scalp around the hair shaft. It can cause hair loss but is very rare. It is easily treated with antibiotics.

Lice

There are two main types of lice, body lice and crab lice. Head lice are very common and are most often found in children. You can tell it is head lice by finding the small egg sack or nit attached to the hair shaft and seeing flea like creatures in the hair. They are easily treated with lice shampoo.

Psoriasis

Is a type of autoimmune deficiency that causes some skin cells to grow fast. This is very common on the scalp as it appears as crusty flakes that are sore to the touch. This disorder can be in small areas or encompass the entire body. It can be triggered by stress or injury. It is treatable but can take time and patience.

Eczema

It also know as dermatitis or inflammation of the skin in certain areas. It is a minor allergic reaction which often appears as a rash. It is common in sulfate allergies.

All of these items can cause itchy scalp. One good thing is that itchy scalp is easily treated and very common so with the proper attention it should be no problem to get rid of it.

Health Benefits of Fish Oil

Health Benefits of Fish Oil

The health benefits of fish oil include its ability to aid in treatment of heart diseases, high cholesterol, depression, anxiety, AHDH, low immunity, cancer, diabetes, inflammation, arthritis, IBD, AIDS, Alzheimers disease, eye disorders, macular degeneration and ulcers. It is helps in weight loss, pregnancy, fertility and skin care (particular for disorders such as psoriasis, acne).

Most of the these health benefits of fish oil can be attributed to the presence of Omega 3 essential fatty acids such as Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Other useful essential fatty acids include Alpha-linolenic acid or ALA and Gamma-linolenic acid or GLA.

The various types of fish which can be a good source of fish oil are mackerel, rainbow trout, lake trout, halibut, herring, sea bass, sardines, swordfish, oysters, albacore tuna, blue fin tuna, yellow fin tuna, turbot, pilchards, anchovies and salmon. The most common names among these for obtaining fish oil are albacore tuna, herring, mackerel, sardines, lake trout and salmon. The type of fish used and the purity standards followed in refining the oil govern the quality of fish oil.

The health benefits of fish oil include the following:

Heart Disease:According to the American Heart Association (AHA), clinical trials have proved that omega 3 is effective in reducing the incidence of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Fish oil, which is abundant in omega 3, therefore, reduces the risk of heart diseases and heart arrhythmias. It lowers the levels of LDL cholesterol, which is bad cholesterol, and increases the HDL levels, which is good cholesterol. Fish oil prevents accumulation of triglycerides and further reduces the levels of excess triglycerides. Preliminary research has also shown that fish oil can be used for preventing atherosclerosis in coronary patients. Thus fish oil is effective in treating heart strokes and regular usage of fish oil can help avoid numerous sudden cardiac deaths. According to the American Heart Association, these preliminary findings should be confirmed by detailed research.

Weight Loss:Fish oil also aids in weight loss process. Research conducted by Professor Peter Howe at the University of South Australia has shown that fish oil improves the efficacy of exercise in reducing weight. Volunteers who were given fish oil diet showed greater weight loss as compared to those who did not consume fish oil diet. Exercise combined with fish oil had a positive effect on the body shape and body composition of the patients.

Blood Circulation:It is believed that fish oil has the ability to improve blood circulation along with reducing triglyceride and serum cholesterol levels.

Immunity: It is believed that regular consumption of fish oil aids in increasing your immunity thereby enabling you to resist incidence of common diseases such as cold, cough and flu. Omega three fatty acids present in fish oil benefit the immune system by effecting cytokines and eicosanoids present in our body. Researchers have also studied the effect of fish meal and fish oil on the immune system of pigs and found that fish oil aided in the growth of the animals. Similar research conducted on mice at Taichung Veterans General Hospital, Taiwan, also gave positive results. Thus fish oil has the potential to enhance the immune system of humans. Fish oil is also beneficial to patients suffering from lupus, which is a disease characterized by the attacks of immune system of the body on various organs and tissues. Fish oil helps in reducing the pain and inflammation that may occur in joints, eyes, kidney, heart, blood vessels, lungs, nerves, etc. It also helps in reducing asso ciated fever, skin rashes and fatigue.

AIDS:Research conducted by the Nutritional Sciences Program in Lexington has increased the promise of fish oil as a treatment of AIDS.

Inflammation:Fish oil has anti inflammatory properties; therefore, it is effective in reducing inflammation in blood and tissues. Regular consumption of fish oil supplements, tablets, pills and capsules is helpful to those suffering from chronic inflammatory diseases. Fish oil is effective in treating gastrointestinal disorders, sprue, short bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) including Crohn's Disease and ulcerative colitis, which are typical disorders of the intestine. Patients suffering from Crohns disease find it difficult to absorb vitamins, fats and essential supplements. Fish oil supplements are an effective diet for such patients. In ulcerative colitis, fish oil prevents the accumulation of leukotriene on the colon. It should be noted that the anti inflammatory properties of fish oil are limited to reducing inflammation. Fish oil provides little effect in preventing inflammation. Research is also being conducted to enhance the anti-inflammatory acti on of fish oil by addition of other dietary supplements and drugs.

ADHD or ADD:Fish oil has the ability to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) due to the high concentration of fatty acids. If your child suffers from hyperactivity, dyslexia, dyspraxia, inability to complete tasks, emotional instability, wavering attitude, poor coordination, short attention span, short term memory, low concentration, tendency to interrupt others, recklessness, hastiness, impetuosity, impulsiveness, low IQ, or learning disorders, fish oil supplements, tablets, pills or capsules are a proven remedy. Research conducted at the University of South Australia and CSIRO has shown that when children suffering from ADHD were given doses of fish oil and evening primrose capsules for 15 weeks, they showed significant improvement. Since brain consists of about 60% of fats, especially essential fatty acids such as omega 3 and omega 6, fish oil helps in improving the functioning of the brain. Further, it is believed that fish oil is useful in the normal development of the brain. It helps your kid concentrate on the studies better. It has been further found that when pregnant women are given regular doses of fish oil, the born toddlers show enhanced hand eye coordination.

Eye Disorders:It is well known that fish oil is good for its ability to improve vision. It also helps in avoiding age related macular degeneration. The National Eye Institute at the National Institute of Health, US, plans to conduct a nation-wide study to evaluate the effect of fish oil in treating macular degeneration. This study will provide strong scientific evidence to the benefits of fish oil for eye care, thereby enabling government agencies and physicians to strongly recommend fish oil for macular degeneration.

Skin Care:Fish oil helps in improving the condition of poor and dry skin by making it shinny and glowing. It is useful in treating various skin problems such as eczema, psoriasis, itching, redness of skin, skin lesions, and rashes. In case of psoriasis, the EPA present in fish oil restricts the growth of pro-inflammatory agents by producing arachidonic acid. Fish oil can also be applied topically to obtain relief from psoriasis. Regular intake of fish oil capsules helps in reducing loss of moisture from the skin. It is also claimed by some people that fish oil helps in preventing sunburns.

Acne:Fish oil is effective for acne as well. EPA is known to inhibit androgen formation. Androgen can affect the formation of sebum in hair follicle.

Cancer:Fish oil is useful in delaying weight loss in patients suffering from pancreatic cancer. Fish oil supplements can also be helpful to patients suffering from cancer related hyperlipidemia.

Diabetes:Type II diabetic patients are more prone to cardio vascular diseases such as coronary heart disease, atherosclerosis, and stroke. As mentioned above, fish oil is helpful in treating various heart problems. Research conducted at the University of Oxford, UK, has proved that fish oil is useful in reducing triglyceride levels in diabetes as well.

Ulcers:The symptoms of peptic ulcer include pain in the abdomen, heartburn, indigestion, nausea, loss in appetite, weight loss, etc. Due to the presence of EPA and DHA, fish oil can be helpful in case of ulcers caused by NSAIDs.

Pregnancy:Fish oil is very useful for pregnant women as DHA present in it helps in the development of the eyes and brain of the baby. It helps in avoiding premature births, low weight at birth, and miscarriage. Research conducted in Denmark, which involved 8,729 pregnant women, concluded that diet with low amounts of fish resulted in higher risk of premature or preterm babies. It is also believed that women who do not have a sufficient intake of EPA and DHA in their diet suffer from depression after birth as there is transfer of some amount of brain mass from the mother to the child in the last stages of pregnancy. Moreover, as mentioned above, when pregnant women are given fish oil supplements, the born kids show enhanced coordination between eye and hand. Thus it is very beneficial to consume fish oil either by eating fish or taking fish oil supplements, tablets, capsules, or pills during pregnancy for the overall development of the child and well being of the mother. Ho wever, it should be noted that fish oil obtained from the liver of the fish, example cod liver oil, should not be consumed during pregnancy as cod liver oil is rich in retinol and vitamin A.

Fertility:Preliminary research conducted on boar has shown that when male boars are fed with diet containing fish oil, the quality of the sperm is enhanced. After ejaculation, the sperms have increased survival against lipid peroxidative attacks in the female genital tract, thereby increasing the chances of conception. On the other hand, similar animal studies have shown inhibition in the synthesis of prostaglandin E and prostaglandin F, which are produced in large quantities by human seminal vesicles. The research found no impact in the count and mobility of sperm.

Hair Care:Fish oil helps maintain a good luster of the hair. Omega three has hair growing properties as it provides nourishment to the follicles. It therefore aids in faster development of hair and preventing hair loss. A good supply of proteins is also necessary for hair growth. Since most fish varieties are rich in protein, eating fish helps in keeping healthy hair.

It is also believed that fish oil helps in asthma and kidney failure. Many people also like to feed fish oil to their pets especially dog and cat as it enables in the growth of shinny hair and smooth skin. It also helps the dogs and cats deal with arthritis, which is a very common disease among pets.

The National High Blood Pressure Education Program, US, has cautioned against wrongful publicity of fish oil as an effective means of lowering high blood pressure in patients suffering from hypertension. According to its report, fish oil supplements lowers high blood pressure only to a small extent in hypertensive patients. Research conducted at the Channing Laboratory, Boston, US has revealed that moderate doses of fish oil supplements have little effect on the condition of high blood pressure in normotensive persons.

Should we replace vegetable oils with fish oil?

No. There are many websites which advice people to stop eating these vegetable oil and switch to fish oil for increasing the intake of omega 3 fatty acids. However, it should be noted that most of these websites take a bias towards fish oil to increase the sales of their products. There is no doubt that fish oil is one of the best sources of omega 3 essential fatty acids. However, other sources should also be consumed.

Here is a brief on Omega 3 fatty acids and Omega 6 fatty acids. There are three types of Omega 3 fatty acids, namely alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). All three are important for the body. Vegetable sources including flax seed oil, soybean oil, hemp oil, canola oil, walnut oil, rapeseed, perilla, chia and tofu are rich in ALA. The human body has the ability to convert ALA to DHA and EPA, though there are limitations to this conversion. It has been found that ALA is also useful in treating heart problems; however, the exact mechanism is yet unknown.

GLA, an important Omega 6 fatty acid, shows promise in the treatment of cancer. It is believed that GLA is useful in treating various problems including arthritis, obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, skin problems, breast pain, premenstrual syndrome and diabetes. The best source for GLA is evening primrose oil.

Caution on dosage:Excessive dosage of fish oil can have adverse allergies and side effects on the body. Further, fish oil can be problematic in many conditions and hence it is necessary to fish oil supplements cautiously. You should consult a doctor or physician for the exact dosage of fish oil you should take. Moreover, fish oil can be consumed in various forms. These include eating the fish directly by baking, roasting, frying, grilling, broiling, or smoking it or eating fish oil which is available in the form of concentrated dietary supplements such as liquid, tablet, capsule, pill, soft gel, etc. Also, there are various pharmaceutical grades of fish oil. You should also consult your doctor to check the mode of eating fish oil.

Fish oil purity

Purity of fish oil is also an important issue which one must pay attention to. Fish oil is obtained from fresh water, farm, ocean, deep sea and shallow sea fish. All these fish can be contaminated with toxic compounds such as mercury, arsenic, lead, forms of calcium, furans, dioxins, PCBs, and methyl mercury, and may affect the human body. Therefore, the fish oil should be pure. Many companies also sell ultra refined fish oil or distilled fish oil, but you should always check if the standards have been followed.

Fish oil and Vitamins

Vitamin A and Vitamin D:Fish oil, especially the one obtained from liver such as the cod liver oil, is a rich source of vitamin A and vitamin D. However, excessive dosage of cod liver oil can lead to Vitamin toxicity, accumulation of excessive vitamins in the body, which can cause side effects.

Vitamin E:There are various beliefs surrounding fish oil and vitamin E. These are:

* Fish oil undergoes oxidation and can become rancid, leading to formation of free radicals. Addition of antioxidants such as vitamin E to fish oil can help prevent the formation of these free radicals. * Excessive dosage of fish oil leads to reduction of Vitamin E in the human body. This loss of vitamin E should be supplemented with external vitamin E supplements. * The combination of fish oil and vitamin E can have added benefit in the treatment of many cancers and heart diseases, than if they are used individually.

Preliminary research has been carried out which prove the above beliefs; however, these need to be substantiated with detailed research before drawing strong conclusions on the use of fish oil and vitamin E.
