Some products were simply a waste of my money because the only thing that had grown visibly smaller is the amount of cash in my pockets! The ones that actually did work only had lasting effects for a very short while, before the weight all came back and at times even more than what I had before. I had gone on all those fat burning soups and weight loss diets that have ever been n existence. I bounced from one diet to another and at some point health actually started deteriorating. Let's just say hat there is only that much that your body can do when all it is being given are some herbs and some pills.

I woke up one day and decided that I'm done fighting with my weight issues. I decided that I will embark on a journey to love my body the way I am. However big or small I am. I got a job a coupe of blocks from where I lived but he fact that I didn't have a car meant that I had t walk to work every single morning. With time my peed increased and I didn't notice any change until about two months down the line my clothes started getting buggy. In actual sense I was getting smaller. About 4 months later I had lost a considerable amount of weight that was visible even to my colleagues. I decided to couple it with a morning jog every morning before going to work. This increased the rate at which I was loosing weight.

My progress gave me both hope and motivation to go on. I took a step further and signed up at the local gym. I started lifting weights and using all those shinny looking machines. In just a matter of 14 months I had gone from a size 16 to a size 10 and I maintained that weight.

Gluten is a protein composite found in wheat, barley, rye, and related species of plants. It has gained popular notice over the last few years as the culprit in celiac disease. The Hartman Group, a market research firm, did some work to determine who is buying gluten-free products and why. One of the most striking findings was that only 7.5% of the people surveyed who had recently bought a gluten-free product had celiac disease. The other 92.5% fell into one of three categories, defined in the Hartman data as, Those with an overall interest in health and wellness, those with an interest in ascetic-based practices of self-improvement, and the ever present fad dieters looking for the flavor of the month diet trend. Clearly, the last of the three groups is the least rational of all. Blindly going along with the latest fad diet is obviously a horrible idea. The nature of fad diets is to rely on hype, marketing, and often outright lies in order to make a quick buck off uneducated people. Not a plan for success. Anyway, its clear that this group of gluten-free purchasers is not operating on logical principles, so they are discarded from our discussion.

The next group is possibly the most interesting, if not mysterious: those adhering to a gluten-free diet because they seem to equate asceticism with self-improvement. Asceticism is the practice of self-denial in order to attain personal and/or spiritual discipline or other benefit. Unfortunately for these individuals, in area of human nutrition (and many other facets of life) discomfort, denial, and limiting choices without necessity are rarely useful solutions. The mindset of pain = good runs rampant through the modern exercise and nutrition culture. Burnout sets, regularly practiced forced reps, the grapefruit diet, and the ridiculously named bootcamp phenomenon are all examples of exercise and dietary regimens that focus mainly not on progress and sustainability but on maximizing exertion and discomfort. The fact is that these misguided methods produce short-term benefits at best and are often detrimental to progress. This disruption allows nutrients and microorganisms from food to pass inappropriately through the intestinal wall and into the body. Symptoms of the disease include abdominal pain, muscle cramps and pains, malnutrition, poor exercise tolerance, and numerous other problems. Anti-gluten fanatics would have you believe that gluten consumption causes leaky gut even in people without celiac or other digestive diseases. However, the evidence indicates that leaky gut is not a cause but in fact an effect of celiac disease. When gluten inflames the intestines of a celiac sufferer, the intercellular proteins of the intestinal walls can become damaged, bringing about leaky gut. Personally, I have always been an advocate of whole wheat, but I have been seeing a lot of Gluten-Free-Diet ads and labels about lately. At the grocery store, on the internet, in restaurant menus and even at the Bakery with BIG exclamation points at the end (!!!) the signs are all around me. I've even seen gluten free pet foods. But if you had asked me, even a month ago, 'exactly what is Gluten?' I would've replied, ' I think it's an ingredient in wood glue.'

Since then I decided to do some research on the issue and look into what all the hype was about. I found out that not only is gluten used as a stabilizing agent in some foods (Ketchup and Ice Cream) but that 'Gluten' actually comes from the Latin word for 'Glue'. (I was close!)

Gluten is a protein that is found in many commonly consumed grains, including Barley, Wheat and Rye. It is what gives breads their chewy and absorbent qualities. When separated from the grain, it is used in some vegetarian diets, because it absorbs the flavor of the broth it is boiled or cooked in. For this reason it is used as a base for imitation meats that are made in China. It is also used to improve the protein content in pet foods.

So, what's wrong with this common component of whole grain? Well, lets start with Celiac Disease. Celiac disease is an inherited autoimmune disease that causes the immune system to attack the villi (small finger-like protrusions) in the small intestine whenever gluten is introduced into the system. This prevents nutrient absorption into the body which causes symptoms such as anemia and fatigue.

If you aren't afflicted with celiac disease, you may still be able to benefit from a gluten free diet. Studies have been done recently linking gluten to a number of negatives. If you suffer from Neuromyelitis, Osteoporosis, Multiple Sclerosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Anemia, Ataxia, even Brain Fog or difficulty concentrating, you may be able to benefit dramatically by eliminating gluten from your diet! Even if a loved one suffers from Downs Syndrome or Autism they could benefit from ditching gluten!

Basically, if you suffer from Celiac disease, any chronic pain issues or cognitive fogginess, you should at least give a gluten free diet a try. This can be a bit tricky if you like to eat breads, pastas and cereals or drink beer, but it IS possible. In fact, it's getting easier and easier as the gluten free diet is gaining momentum and manufacturers, restaurants and bakeries are all producing products with this new diet option in mind. There are gluten free breads, pastas, cereals as well as beers that are available. There are also grain alternatives such as quinoa, soy, rice, potato and buckwheat. Oh, and vegetables and fruits are gluten free so there is no need for concern there as long as they are whole and fresh.

In conclusion, though whole wheat definitely has it's benefits, (like the fact that it is a great source of fiber, protein, iron, calcium and minerals,) for some people, it may be worth a shot to avoid it. If you have celiac disease, whole wheat and grains should be avoided entirely. If you happen to have any of the other issues listed earlier I would recommend giving gluten a seat on the sidelines for at least a few weeks. See if you start feeling any better.
